2027 Film Submissions

What We’re Looking For:

Hornstrandir Film Festival (HFF) seeks powerful, thought-provoking films that explore the relationship between humans, nature, climate, and health. We welcome both feature-length and short films that bring audiences closer to the natural world—its beauty, its fragility, and its deep connection to human wellbeing.

A Different Kind of Festival Experience:

We invite filmmakers to join us in a unique, immersive experience across the remote wilderness of Hornstrandir Nature Reserve. Together, we hike between screening locations, carrying everything on our backs, crossing rivers, mountains, and valleys, sometimes staying in tents and sometimes in hut houses.

Filmmakers joining HFF must be prepared to:

  • Hike with their gear across challenging terrain

  • Carry personal equipment and essentials throughout the journey

  • Adapt to unpredictable weather conditions

  • Navigate an environment with no mobile signal and limited access to electricity

Curated and Intimate:

HFF is intentionally small and carefully curated. Each year, we select only six feature films and four short films to be part of the journey. These films are screened across 3–5 remote locations throughout the Hornstrandir Nature Reserve, creating a moving festival experience where each screening is unique—shaped by its surroundings, the elements, and the people.

By limiting the number of films, we ensure that every selected work receives the attention it deserves and becomes an integral part of the shared experience. Filmmakers, hosts and audiences travel together (in total maximum 40 PAX) allowing for deeper conversations, stronger connections, and a truly immersive environment, it’s not about quantity—it’s about presence, quality, and creating unforgettable moments between film and nature.

  • Deadline for this year's submissions is March 1st 2027.

  • Full featured films (max 80 min)

  • The films submitted cannot be older than 1 years from premiere day, not available online and not been premiered in Iceland before.

  • Our themes are Climate, Nature, Wildlife or Health related topics.

  • We are on the hunt for stories that are thought provoking and make us rethink our behavior towards our most valuable resources. Stories that can make a change, capture people's attention and most importantly bring about a positive change in people's Climate, environmental, wildlife and Health mindset.

  • We are looking for films and filmmakers that are on a quest to educate, advocate and make a difference with their storytelling.

  • We accept all languages if subtitles are in english
